Southern Buttermilk Biscuits A Sunday Morning Family Tradition
My daddy grew up eating these warm, flaky buttermilk biscuits, and now they’ve become a Sunday morning tradition in my own kitchen. Soft on the inside, golden on the outside, and perfect with butter, jam, or gravy, these biscuits always bring back memories of family breakfasts and gatherings. The church ladies are always asking for the recipe, so here it is—shared in exchange for a simple “Yum”!
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
¾ cup cold buttermilk
2 tablespoons melted butter for brushing
Optional Additions
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon chopped chives
1 teaspoon honey for a touch of sweetness
Fresh cracked black pepper
Instructions
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
Pour in the cold buttermilk and stir just until the dough comes together.
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently pat it into a 1-inch-thick rectangle.
Fold the dough over itself 3–4 times to create flaky layers.
Pat the dough out again and cut with a biscuit cutter.
Place biscuits on a baking sheet with sides touching for softer edges or spaced apart for crispier sides.
Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Brush with melted butter immediately after baking.
