These soft, golden buns are the kind of homemade treat that makes everyone think they came straight from a bakery display case. Light and fluffy on the outside, filled with a rich and velvety vanilla cream on the inside, and finished with a sweet glaze that melts into every bite, they’re simply irresistible.

Ingredients

For the Dough

– 4 cups (500 g) all-purpose flour

– ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar

– 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast

– 1 teaspoon salt

– 1 cup (240 ml) warm milk

– ¼ cup (60 g) unsalted butter, softened

– 2 large eggs

For the Vanilla Cream Filling

– 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk

– ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar

– 3 tablespoons cornstarch

– 2 egg yolks

– 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

– 1 tablespoon butter

For the Glaze

– 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar

– 2–3 tablespoons milk

– ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

1. Combine the warm milk, yeast, and a teaspoon of sugar in a bowl.

2. Let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

3. Add the flour, remaining sugar, salt, softened butter, and eggs.

4. Knead until a smooth and elastic dough forms.

5. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 2: Make the Cream Filling

1. In a saucepan, whisk together the sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks.

2. Slowly add the milk while whisking continuously.

3. Cook over medium heat until thick and creamy.

4. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract and butter.

5. Allow the cream to cool completely before using.

Step 3: Assemble the Buns

1. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions.

2. Flatten each piece and place a spoonful of the cooled cream filling in the center.

3. Carefully seal the edges and shape into smooth balls.

4. Arrange on a lined baking tray, leaving space between each bun.

5. Cover and let rise for another 30–40 minutes.

Step 4: Bake

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

2. Bake the buns for 18–22 minutes, or until beautifully golden.

3. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool slightly.

Step 5: Glaze

1. Mix the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.

2. Drizzle over the warm buns.

3. Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestion

Enjoy these buns warm, when the creamy filling is at its most luscious and the glaze is perfectly soft. Pair them with coffee, tea, or a cold glass of milk for an unforgettable treat.
